I've come to this thought...how wonderful would it be if we began to celebrate what African Americans are doing now. I'm not discrediting the great people of the past, but damn. We hear about the same people and events from year to year. What new are we learning? That African Americans have only made contributions to our country years ago. And of course there were only a hand full of people doing anything to make a difference anyway. Come on. Let's begin celebrating today...the now. Maybe then people, young people, can feel proud and relate to the accomplishments of today.
Let's be real, who can honestly relate to Booker T. Washington, or Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. Dubois, etc. Now, who can relate to the single mother, who raised three kids while going to college, and is now the CEO of a fortune 500 company? Who can look up to the man, who came from nothing, and built a successful restaurant business that has fed people in his community for 20 years.
Just a thought. Challenge.
